Alumni News: Two Wheels to Nowhere

You can listen to an audio documentary by David Anderson, aka Aengus Anderson, aka David the Younger, about his 13,843 mile motorcycle journey around America on the Third Coast International Audio Festival. During the journey, David “got to know a steady stream of people on his trip – like Jasper the tow-truck operator, Randall the self-proclaimed renaissance man, and Kathy the pie baker – and also spent a good amount of time confronting his own life questions, while dodging the rain drops and eating too many Cliff Bars along the way.”

The Third Coast International Audio Festival is a non-profit arts organization that was originally part of Chicago Public Radio and now shares space with This American Life, so the fact that his audio documentary is featured on this site means it is receiving national exposure.

David was a Kino student from the time he was three until he graduated from high school in 2000. In addition to motorcycle journeys, photography, and audio journalism, he is pursuing a graduate degree in history at the U of A.

The two performances of The Real Inspector Hound — one in the evening so families could see it, and one in the morning for the whole school – went off with only the minor hitches that make school performances extra entertaining, like when when Magnus (played by Ian) nearly fell over in his wheelchair. If you missed it, there are plans to make a DVD and put it on You Tube.

How we celebrated Earth Day

We put in our summer garden!

Each homeroom chose what they wanted to plant, using a list of Heather’s suggestions and coming up with their own ideas. Homerooms have patches in the greenhouse, in the gardens below the primary playground, and in the terraced gardens. We planted corn, beans, watermelon, tomatoes, carrots, strawberries, chives, parsley, herbs, kholrabi. okra, sunflowers, zinnias, and luffas! We also did some spring cleaning in the desert around the school while we were at it.

Here’s some of what we overheard:

“What are you planting? Green beans? My favorite!”

“What’s the matter? You walk in it whenever you go in the goat pen.”

Sara: “I love this day! I got to plant things!”

Butterfly magic

Primary students checked out the butterflies at the Tucson Botanical Gardens on Monday. Now they are learning all about butterflies and their life cycles — both in English and in Spanish.
