The Trash Project

Alex

This week students are asking “What do I throw away?”  “Where does it go?” They are saving nearly every bit of trash and garbage they produce for the entire week. (Used toilet paper is the exception.)

On Monday, Jennifer and Heather passed out large plastics bags. Starting Tuesday, every day students are weighing the garbage and trash they produced that day. They are recording the total weight and then sorting and recording everything that is recyclable and compostable. Compostable garbage goes straight into our compost bin.

At the end of the project, they’ll be visiting a landfill and a recycling center to see where their trash and garbage goes.

Already Cassandra (who produced the most trash today — 915.5 grams) says, “This already makes me feel more responsible.”
